Origin and history
The Grand Calvary of Pfaffenheim is a historical monument located in the communal cemetery, Place de la Mairie. Commanded in 1834 as part of the expansion of the cemetery, it illustrates the 19th century Alsatian funerary architecture. Its original iconography and its imposing size make it a landmark of local heritage.
The building was initiated by sculptor Xavier Friedrich and completed after his death by Joseph-Euloge Rauffer, an artist from Fribourg. These two artisans marked the monument of their respective style, mixing local influences and regional techniques. The Calvary, owned by the commune, was registered as a historical monument by order of 13 December 2000.
Located in the Haut-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region, this calvary is part of a historical context where funeral monuments played a central role in community life. At that time, cemeteries were often expanded to respond to population growth, and calvaries served as spiritual and artistic landmarks for Alsatian rural populations.
