Portal from the former church: registration by decree of 26 March 1934
Origin and history
The chapel of the Bellignies Cemetery, classified as a Historic Monument, is distinguished by its stone façade, typical of the Renaissance. Its arched portal, framed by two ground columns, is surmounted by a niche housing a statue. The upper part of the pinion has arches in facing doucins, decorated with pearls and grooves, while a polylobic oculus pierces the structure. This gate came from the old church of Bellignies, demolished in the 19th century, and was reused to build the current chapel in the cemetery.
The most remarkable element of this monument is its gate, inscribed by decree of 26 March 1934. The reuse of the original church façade illustrates a common practice of partial preservation of the heritage, where significant architectural elements were saved despite the destruction of the original building. The chapel, owned by the commune, thus bears witness to the artistic and religious heritage of the region, while offering a concrete example of architectural recycling.
The location of the chapel, at 9 Rue du Château in Bellignies (Northern Department), is documented with a priori satisfactory accuracy (note 6/10). Although the sources do not specify its current accessibility, its status as a Historical Monument and its origin related to the old church make it a site of major heritage interest for the Hauts-de-France. The photographs available, such as Lavesnois59 under Creative Commons license, allow us to appreciate its sculptural details and its integration into the local funeral landscape.
