Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Laversine is a 16th century religious monument in the village of Laversine, in the department of Aisne. This type of cross, often placed at the entrance or centre of cemeteries, served both as a spiritual marker and a funeral marker for the local community. Its designation as a historical monument in 1927 is a testament to its heritage importance and preservation as part of the regional cultural landscape.
In the 16th century, the villages of Hauts-de-France, then integrated into Picardie, were mostly organized around agriculture and parish life. Cemetery crosses played a central role in funeral rituals and religious processes, strengthening social cohesion around the Christian faith. These monuments, often made of stone, also reflected the know-how of the local artisans and the piety of the sponsors, although they remained anonymous for the cross of Laversine.
The cross is now owned by the municipality of Laversin and remains a tangible vestige of Renaissance rural religious architecture. Its current location, near Main Street, and its state of conservation make it possible to study artistic and symbolic practices of the time.
