Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Saint-Dizant-du-Bois is a 17th century religious monument, located in the immediate vicinity of the parish church. It marks the location of the old cemetery of the village, now disappeared. Its cask, decorated with slug shells, rests on a sculpted base of various motifs: fern leaves in the east, interlacing to the west, a gerbe of flowers in the north and a cross in relief to the south. Two steps lead to this small ordeal, typical of funeral growths of the modern period in Saintonge.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 15 February 1913, this cross illustrates 17th century local Christian art. Its protected elements include the carved stone itself, property of the municipality. The Merimée base places it precisely at the address "1 Rue du Puits", although its GPS location is considered mediocre (level 5/10). This type of monument served both as a spiritual landmark for the deceased and as a place of prayer for the living, reflecting the importance of religion in rural daily life.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage interest, including its slug decorations and stylized plant motifs. These characteristics make it a remarkable example of the funeral growths of Charente-Maritime, a region where the influence of Saintongese Romanesque art still persists at this time. The 1913 ranking shows its early historical value, in a context where the protection of the small rural heritage begins to emerge in France.
