Origin and history

The cemetery of Cuiseaux, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, houses a chapel classified as historical monuments since 21 December 1904. This monument, built in the 1st quarter of the 15th century, presents a simple plan with a unique nave and a flat bedside. Its sober architecture includes buttresses, a door in full hanger, and a summital bell. Inside, murals and a cross of consecration were studied, revealing a preserved religious decor.

According to the writings of Court Sword, the chapel, dedicated to St James, is the vestige of a former hospital founded around 1300, whose first traces date back to 1404. It was reportedly built in 1406 by Jacquemet Thurtel, on the site of the cemetery of this medieval hospital. Located below a dominant mountain, it lost its original function in the 18th century when the hospital was moved to a new site with its own chapel.

Today, the chapel of Saint-Jacques, owned by the commune, remains an architectural and historical testimony of the hospital and religious life of the Middle Ages in Burgundy. Its classification in 1904 underlines its heritage importance, while its location at the 6 Chemin de Saint-Jacques in Cuiseaux makes it an accessible place, although its current use (visits, events) is not specified in the available sources.
