Origin and history
The Grande Fontaine de Dole is a 13th century work in the town of Dole, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is associated with the remains of an old stone bridge, mentioned in a franchise charter dated 1274. This bridge had replaced a 12th century wooden structure, attested as early as 1138, and was partially covered in the 16th century by the Saint-André bastion, reflecting the defensive evolutions of the city.
Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone numerous repairs, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, due to the damage caused by the floods of the Doubs. In 1762, a new bridge was built to replace the old bridge, then at risk. Today, the Grande Fontaine and the remains of the medieval bridge, located below the streets of the Prélot and Pasteur, are protected by decrees of 1950 and 1996, bearing witness to their heritage importance.
The site is shared between communal property, the state and a private company. Its location, close to the river, and its history of urban and military infrastructure make it a key element of the Doloian heritage. The approximate location and available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its anchoring in the medieval and modern history of the region.
