Origin and history
The Dolmen de la Lauze is a megalithic monument located in Banne, in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from Neolithic, it bears witness to the funeral and architectural practices of prehistoric societies of that time. This type of structure, composed of large erect stones, generally served as a collective burial and marked the landscape in a sustainable manner.
The site was mentioned for the first time by Jules de Malbos (1782-1867), a geologist and speleologist ardècheis recognized for his work on the natural and historical riches of the region. In 1889, the dolmen was classified as historical monuments, making it one of the first protected megalithic sites in France. This official recognition underscores its heritage and archaeological importance.
Today, the Dolmen de la Lauze remains an emblematic vestige of the megalithic sites of the Ardèche. Although the practical information about his visit is limited, his classification and his mention in databases such as Mérimée confirm his status as a heritage to be preserved. It illustrates, along with other similar monuments, the ancient occupation of this territory and the know-how of neolithic communities.
