Origin and history

The Hotel Vauloup is a private hotel built between 1828 and 1856, located at the 3rd of Place Général-Mellinet, in the Dervallières-Zola district of Nantes. It is part of a set of eight identical hotels bordering an octagonal square, designed by the architects Blond and Amouroux in 1827. This urban project marked the extension of Nantes to the west and the port, reflecting the architectural ambitions of the Restoration.

The Mellinet Square was set up at the site of the former Launay property, symbolizing a major urban planning operation for the city. The facades and roofs of the Hotel Vauloup were listed as historical monuments by order of 24 October 1988, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The building successively sheltered the industrial preserver Charles Philippe in 1856, then Georges Pilon in 1913.

The architectural ensemble of the Place Mellinet, with its hotels with uniform facades and their parks at the rear, is a unique example in Nantes of the 19th century bourgeois residential architecture. The construction lasted from 1828 to 1874, incorporating stylistic elements characteristic of this period, as Jean-Luc Flohic points out in Le Patrimoine des communes de la Loire-Atlantique (1999).
