Origin and history

The building located 25 rue Basse in Mende is a former 18th century mansion, built against the city walls. It still incorporates today a large part of these fortifications, while its terrace on the garden corresponds to the old round path. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the time in Lozerian, mixing aristocratic habitat and medieval defensive heritage.

Originally, the property belonged to the Malglorie de Salles family, before becoming the Barbot hotel. Today's families are renamed Chanterone. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1985 protects its facades, roofs, its interior staircase and the calade of its courtyard, testimonies of its past prestige. The location against the ramparts underlines its role in Mendais urban planning, between private space and collective memory.

The accuracy of its location is considered passable (note 5/10), with a confirmed address at Merimée base (25 rue Basse) and a close GPS approximation (22 rue Basse). The site does not seem open to the public, but its history remains linked to the social evolution of Mende, between 18th century provincial nobility and preserved heritage.
