Origin and history
The building at 372 rue Saint-Honoré, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, was built in the first half of the 18th century, more precisely after 1717. Its architecture is attributed to Robert de Cotte, a renowned architect of the time. The building underwent a major transformation around 1850, with the addition of an additional floor, partially altering its original appearance.
In the middle of the 18th century, this building became an emblematic place of Parisian intellectual life thanks to Mrs Geoffrin, who held a literary salon there after 1750. This exhibition, frequented by the major figures of the Enlightenment, marked the cultural history of the capital. Later, in the 19th century, the writer François-René de Chateaubriand stayed there, adding an additional literary dimension to his history.
The facades and roofs on the street were inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 21 July 1994, thus recognizing their heritage value. Today, the building belongs to a private company and retains traces of its prestigious past, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10) according to available databases.
