Origin and history

The building located at 25 rue des Lavandières-Sainte-Opportune and 1 rue du Plat-d Its construction, dated from the middle of the 16th century, is distinguished by a staircase in screws with ribbed core and a frame of wood masked under a coating, characteristic of the constructive techniques of the period.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, the building was partially protected by order of 25 November 1994, covering its facades, roofs and screw stairs. This building illustrates the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where medieval wooden structures coexist with new decorative elements, reflecting the evolution of tastes and know-how.

The location of the building, close to streets with evocative names as rue des Lavandières-Sainte-Opportune, recalls the artisanal and commercial activities that animated this Parisian neighborhood in the 16th century. Its state of conservation and its protection testify to the heritage importance attached to these remains of a pre-Hhaussmannian Paris, now partially extinct.
