Origin and history

La Croix d'Antras is a monumental cross located in the village of Antras, in the Ariège department, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 18th century, it is characterized by a simple structure: a cross supported by a curved marble column, resting on a convex pedestal itself placed on a polygonal base. This monument, typical of the cross road or square of Occitan villages, reflects the local craftsmanship and the importance of religious symbols in the public space at that time.

The marble cross has been listed as historic monuments since 17 April 1950, recognizing its heritage value. It is located in the central square of Antras, in the district of Saint-Girons and in the community of communes Couserans-Pyrénées. Although the sources do not mention its sponsor or its precise use, this type of monument often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for the inhabitants, marking a gathering place or crossroads.

From an architectural point of view, the cross is distinguished by its noble material – marble – and its sober design, typical of the rural achievements of the eighteenth century in Occitanie. The curved columns and polygonal bases were common for this type of building, combining robustness and aesthetics. Today, the cross belongs to the municipality of Antras and remains a testimony of the local religious and artisanal heritage, accessible to the public in the village square.
