Origin and history

The mansion of Aubigné, located in Vaiges in the department of Mayenne (Pays de la Loire), is a building built in the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It represents one of the few vestiges of an autonomous medieval farm, where only iron and salt were purchased outside. Today, only the main house, built on a rock, remains with its staircase turret offering an extended panorama. The facade, made of grey granite, is surmounted by sharp gables pierced with gable windows, characteristic of Renaissance architecture.

The manor house was remodeled after the Hundred Years' War, then at the beginning of the sixteenth century by François d'Aubigné, who also had a chapel built there, today disappeared. This site, which has been a historical monument since 1985, illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The commons, made up of two lengths, complete the whole, although most of the original agricultural buildings have disappeared.

The mansion is open to the public only during Heritage Days, allowing to discover its architecture and history. Its listing in the inventory of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance in the region. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its role as a witness to the local history and civil architecture of Mayenne.
