Origin and history

The Amboise Clock Tower is a belfry built between 1495 and 1500 above the Amass Gate, the main medieval entrance to the city. It rests on a 13th century wall, keeping a vaulted passage in a broken cradle that once allowed to cross the enclosure. The squared tower incorporates a clock and a bell melted in 1501, symbolizing its dual role as a watchtower and time marker for the community.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 28 February 1933, the tower had already seen its adjacent circular staircase inscribed as early as 12 June 1928. These successive protections underline its heritage importance, both for its architecture (hexagonal loin, sled windows) and for its anchoring in Amboise's urban history. The cylindrical staircase turret and the awnings housing the clocks on each roof pan illustrate the care taken to build it.

Located at the intersection of National Street and Mably Street, the tower overlooks a historic axis linking the interior of the city with the old suburbs. Its strategic location, both limited and central, reflects its past use: access control and hours broadcast. The preservation of the 13th century vault under the structure of the 15th century bears witness to the historical strata of the monument, where periods and functions overlap.

The bell, one meter high and housed in the campanile, complemented the belfry's sound system, essential for the rhythm of daily life (alerts, working hours, religious offices). The large sill windows, oriented towards the city and the suburbs, ensured maximum visibility, reinforcing its role as a watchdog. Today owned by the municipality, the tower embodies the architectural and urban heritage of Indre-et-Loire.
