Origin and history

The Hotel de Clermont-Mont-Saint-Jean, also known as Hôtel des Douanes, is a former mansion built at the end of the 18th century in the city centre of Chambéry, Savoie. Built between 1784 and 1792 according to the plans of architect Denis-Philibert Lapret, it was commissioned by the Marquis de Clermont-Mont-Saint-Jean, member of the Maison de Clermont-Tonnerre. The latter, after a military and political career, emigrated in 1791 before the completion of the works, leaving the hotel unfinished when he left.

The building was confiscated as a national property and sold in 1799 to Louis-Pierre Pollingual, a lawyer. His son, Jean-Baptiste Pollingue, sold him to Customs and Gabelles Royales in 1841. Since then, the building has housed the Regional Customs Directorate. Partially classified as historical monuments since 1948 (façades and roofs), it is distinguished by its iconic architecture of the eighteenth century and its central location, alongside the courthouse and the museum of fine arts.

The Hotel des Douanes illustrates the turbulent history of Savoy between Revolution and Restoration. Its change of ownership reflects the political upheavals of the time, while its current function perpetuates its administrative role. Among the 25 protected monuments of Chambéry, it bears witness to the architectural and historical heritage of the city, marked by the influence of local noble families such as the Clermont-Tonnerre.
