Origin and history
The church of Saint-Illiers de Bazemont, located in the Yvelines department in Île-de-France, is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. It was erected as a parish in 1176, marking its importance in the local church organization from the Middle Ages. Built of Lutetian limestone extracted from local quarries, it reflects the resources and know-how of the region.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone many changes, particularly between the Renaissance and the contemporary era, reflecting its adaptation to architectural changes and liturgical needs. Its characteristic building tower dominates the landscape of Bazemont. The building houses several classified objects, including a cenotaph made in the workshop of sculptor Germain Pilon, highlighting his exceptional artistic heritage.
In 1933, the church was listed as historic monuments by ministerial decree, recognizing its heritage value. Excavations conducted in 2000 revealed six statues under the pavement, including those of Saint Quentin and Saint Roch, enriching the knowledge of his history. More recently, renovations in 2019 have restored part of the structure and replaced tiles, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
The church of Saint-Illiers thus illustrates nearly nine centuries of religious and architectural history, while remaining an active place of worship and an identity symbol for the municipality of Bazemont. Its movable and real estate heritage, protected and maintained, makes it a valuable testimony of the local and regional past.
