Origin and history

The Baths Chambert of Bagnères-de-Luchon, built between 1848 and 1856 by architect Edmond Chambert, replaced a thermal building destroyed by a fire in 1841. The project is based on the large European establishments visited by Chambert (Germany, Switzerland, France), with an initial estimate of 600,000 francs. The building adopts an H-shaped plan centered on the Salle des Pas Perdus, vaulted and decorated with frescoes by Romain Cazes (1854–58), illuminated by glass windows and decorated with local marbles (brèche de Saint-Béat, red griotte). The 97-metre-long façade features a colonnade of 28 monolithic doric columns in white marble, interrupted by a monumental arcade surmounted by a triangular pediment.

The thermal complex initially includes 9 bathrooms (100 baths), 3 swimming pools (including one swimming pool), showers, steam baths, and 18 buvettes distributed along the Promenoir des buvettes. The pavilions, covered with double-built roofs or pavilions, conserve painted decorations and glass windows. The central room frame is designed to withstand snow, with adjustable punches. Upstairs, a room once housed a relief plan of the Pyrenees (circa 1870), now transferred to the casino. The springs, exploited since Roman times, were rediscovered in the seventeenth century, with a first thermal building built in 1759 and destroyed in 1803.

Classified as a Historical Monument in 1977 (for the upper part of the hall and its paintings), the structure illustrates the golden age of spas under the Second Empire. Local materials (schiste, stone of the Picadère, slates) combine with innovative techniques for the period, such as underground galleries or lingerie heating systems. The architect Chambert, appointed in 1845, oversees an ambitious project, marked by stylistic variants (frontons, arcades) before reaching the present doric party. The site, owned by the municipality, remains a major testimony of Pyrenean thermal planning, mixing hygienism, neo-classical aesthetics and exploitation of natural resources.
