Road Cross (cad. A 478): Order of 9 November 1960

Origin and history

The road cross of Barnazat, located in Saint-Denis-Combarnazat in Puy-de-Dôme, is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth century. This Latin cross, of the fanal type, is distinguished by its andesite structure, a volcanic material typical of the region. Its base, composed of circular degrees and polygonal dice, supports a cylindrical barrel topped with ground and flowered arms. A circle adorned with four leaves surrounds the centre of the cross, adding to its decorative and symbolic character.

The decoration of the cross includes sculpted elements such as armorized shields with winged corners at the base of the drum, as well as bunches of curled leaves at the ends of the arms. These motifs, combined with oric mouldings and alternating cellars, reflect a neat craftsmanship and a religious or heraldic symbolism. The cross, classified as Historic Monument by decree of 9 November 1960, is now owned by the municipality and bears witness to the local architectural and spiritual heritage.

The location of the cross, on Barnazat Square, suggests its historical role as a landmark or place of devotion for travelers and inhabitants. Its style and ornaments recall the artistic traditions of the Renaissance in Auvergne, where the cross of paths served as both territorial markers and expressions of faith. The accuracy of its location remains moderate, but its heritage importance is recognized by official sources as Monumentum.
