Origin and history
The collections of the Areines Municipal Museum originated in 1862 when historical and artistic objects were collected in confidential premises. Five years later, in 1867, these collections were officially offered to the city and became a communal heritage. They cover various fields: archaeology (gallo-Roman fibuls, bronze treasures), fine arts (paintings, sculptures), decorative arts (basis of Rouen, Nevers, Delft), and natural sciences (ornithology, geology).
In 1968, a new building was built to house the museum, including the municipal library. This site settles in part of the ancient Benedictine abbey of the Trinity, founded in the Middle Ages. During the renovation of 1990, architectural elements of the eighteenth century, such as the staircase leading to the dormitories of the monks, were preserved, becoming major assets of the place. The museum also exhibits reconstructions, such as a traditional vendômois house or extra-European collections (Burma, Japan).
Highlights include objects from local excavations, such as Fresnes' bronze treasure or Roman heating elements (hypocaust), as well as objects from the ancient daily (oil lamps, locks). A harp belonging to Queen Marie-Antoinette and faiences of the 17th and 18th centuries complete this eclectic ensemble. The museum, labeled Musée de France, highlights both regional history and universal curiosities, while preserving tangible traces of its monastic past.
