Origin and history
The church of Ponthouin, located in the commune of Mézières-sur-Ponthouin in Sarthe, is a rural monument whose origins date back to the eleventh century. Its north wall and west façade retain a characteristic apparatus in opus spicatum as well as Romanesque bays dated between 1025 and 1050. These elements testify to its medieval foundation, typical of the small country churches of the time.
In the 16th century, the church underwent major transformations, including the addition of a richly worked choir panel, partially preserved today. Wall paintings from the same period, visible on the north wall of the nave, illustrate the artistic and religious evolution of the Renaissance. The nave panel was replaced in the 19th century, marking another phase of change.
The site also includes a historical cemetery enclosure, always bounded by its original walls. The whole, including the pillars of the western portal, was protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments in 2016. This protection covers the entire church and its enclosure, with the exception of recent graves. The property belongs to the municipality, stressing its anchor in local life.
The location of the church, although documented (address: Le Petit Parc, 72290 Mézières-sur-Ponthouin), remains of an accuracy deemed satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). This monument thus illustrates almost a millennium of religious and architectural history in the Pays de la Loire, from the Romanesque period to the classic additions of the eighteenth century.
