Origin and history
The building located at 28-30 rue Saint-Georges in Rennes is a remarkable architectural complex of the second half of the seventeenth century. It consists of two buildings arranged in a thread, separated by inner courtyards, and preserves elements characteristic of this period: stone and woodpan structure, structural staircases, and a painted ceiling. These buildings bear witness to a real estate momentum triggered by the construction of the nearby Parliament of Brittany in 1618, marking a period of urban and architectural development for the city.
The facades, roofs, common areas (scenes, internal courtyards), as well as the painted ceiling and fireplaces on the first floor of the central building, were protected by an inscription under the title of Historic Monuments in 2014. This ensemble reflects the constructive techniques and decorative style in vogue in the Rennes of the Great Century, while stressing the importance of bourgeois housing in the urban landscape of the time.
The location of these buildings, a few steps from Parliament, also illustrates the social and spatial organization of the city, where judicial and administrative elites directly influenced urban planning. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the evolution of lifestyles and architectural practices in Brittany in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
