Origin and history

The building, located at 74 rue de la République in Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, is a mansion built in the first half of the 18th century. It illustrates the architectural features of this period, with a U-side facade and a layout between courtyard and garden. The front façade has two levels of ground three-window drills, while two low pavilions frame the entrance porch, marked by a curved arch with a key stamp.

At the back, the front garden side extends over seven windows per floor, reflecting a spatial organization typical of the mansions of the time. The interior preserves original woodwork, and the living room, redesigned at the end of the 18th century, has decorative elements in the style of Directoire, such as a fireplace and woodwork. These details highlight the evolution of architectural tastes between the middle and the end of the century.

The building was registered as historic monuments by order of October 22, 1969, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The protection covers the entire building, excluding buildings located at the bottom of the garden. This inscription is part of a desire to preserve the architectural heritage of the island of Oléron, marked by a rich history linked to its strategic and commercial role.

Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, commune of Charente-Maritime, has long been an important economic and administrative center of the island. In the 18th century, the region was marked by maritime, commercial and agricultural activities, with a local bourgeoisie investing in residences reflecting their social status. Private hotels, like this building, served both as a place of life and a symbol of prestige in a hierarchical society.
