Origin and history
The building located 9 Place du Parlement-de-Bretagne in Rennes is one of the buildings built after the great fire of 1720, which devastated much of the city. These buildings, characteristic of the 18th century, are distinguished by their large granite arcades in the middle of the pit, structuring a ground floor, a basement and two floors, crowned by a floor of attices at the Mansart. The facades, rhythmized by ionic pilasters, illustrate the classic post-fire style, marked by a desire for orderly and monumental reconstruction.
The Palace Square, where this building stands, was completely redesigned after the 1720 disaster, becoming a symbol of the Rennes urban renaissance. The building, whose facade on the square and the return to the rue Nationale are classified as Monument Historic since 1959, bears witness to this period of reconstruction. Protected elements also include roofs and chimney stumps, reflecting attention to overall architectural harmony.
The available data indicate that the location of the building (Insee code 35238) corresponds to the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany. Although the sources mention a poor location accuracy (note 5/10), the official address recorded in the Merimée base confirms its historic anchoring in the heart of Rennes, between Parliament Square and National Street.
