The staircase with its wrought iron ramp and cage (Box AP 19): inscription by order of 9 December 1983
Origin and history
The building at 25 rue Sala in Lyon, in the Rhône department, dates from the second quarter of the 18th century. This building, typical of the Lyon civil architecture of that time, is distinguished by its staircase adorned with a wrought iron ramp, emblematic of the mansions and bourgeois buildings of the period. The building is now owned by a private company, and only the stairwell, with its ramp and decor, has been protected under the Historic Monuments since 1983.
The location of the building, in the historical district of Lyon (near the Presquíle and the Vieux-Lyon), reflects the increasing urbanization of the city in the 18th century, marked by the rise of the trade and silk industry. The buildings of this time were often designed to combine residential function with social representation, with decorative elements such as wrought iron ramps, symbols of wealth and craftsmanship. These buildings were involved in the structuring of the central districts, where local artisans, merchants and elites lived.
The staircase of the building, protected by decree of 9 December 1983, illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of remarkable architectural elements, even in private buildings. This partial protection underscores the heritage value of ornamental details, often threatened by renovations or changes in use. Today, the building does not seem open to the public, and its current use (offices, housing, or other) is not specified in the available sources.
