Origin and history
The Hotel de Balay is a private hotel built between 1718 and 1724 in Lons-le-Saunier, Jura department. The Marquis de Balay, who sponsored the site, had this vast building built on land previously occupied by the Cordeliers. The architecture reflects the fashionable style at the beginning of the eighteenth century, with facades and roofs characteristic of this period.
After the French Revolution, the hotel lost its residential function and was reassigned to administrative and military uses. It houses successive public services and troops before being transformed into a public school. This reconversion illustrates the adaptation of historic buildings to the changing needs of society.
In 1996, parts of the hotel, including facades, roofs of the house and commons, and an office on the ground floor, were protected by an inscription in the Historic Monuments. Today, the building belongs to the municipality of Lons-le-Saunier and maintains a precise location at 7 rue des Cordeliers.
