Origin and history

The Collège Notre-Dame de Mello, located in the Oise, is a Gothic church built in two phases: the base and the triforium around 1200, then the high windows and vaults between 1210 and 1220. Although in Gothic style, its first windows, with Romanesque inspiration, betray an architectural transition. Founded as a collegiate church in 1103 by Martin de Mello, it also became a parish church in 1502. Its history is marked by major changes, especially in the sixteenth century, where side chapels and structural repairs partially alter its external appearance, without altering its inner harmony.

The collapse of the abside in 1741 left a permanent scar: the choir was closed by a flat wall pierced by a simple window. Ranked a historic monument in 1921, the church underwent restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially after the damage of the Second World War. Its openwork triforium, rare for the period, and its ambitious vaults contrast with its small dimensions, typical of the seigneurial churches of Beauvais. The relic of the True Cross, the object of historical lusts, disappeared during the Revolution.

Outside, the southern facade, overlooking the Church Square, hides an interior elevation on three levels (large arcades, triforium, high windows). The Gothic porch, adorned with a gable with a statue of the Virgin, and the rosacea of the crusillons (including a remodeled in the 16th century) illustrate its stylistic evolution. The mutilated choir and the 16th century funeral chapels, like that of the Montmorency, bear witness to the close links between the church and the local lords.

The interior, more homogeneous, reveals a nave and a transept to the original supports: truncated columns, hooked capitals, and ivy vaults in the cross. The triforium, present on almost every wall, offers a characteristic light play, while the seigneurial rostrum in the north, accessible from the former castle of Argyle, emphasizes its role in feudal life. Two pieces of furniture, a 16th century work bench and a supporting panel, are classified as historical monuments.

The college embodies the religious and seigneurial history of Mello, from its medieval foundation to its modern transformations. Its classification and successive restorations preserve an atypical Gothic heritage, where Romanesque influences, architectural innovations and traces of local conflicts, such as the disappearance of the sacred relic or the damage of war, are mixed.
