Origin and history
The former stone quarry of Chassal-Molinges, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is an industrial vestige marked by its past exploitation. The site, which includes tiles, fronts, underground galleries and a canteen and changing room building, is a testament to local extraction techniques. These elements, with the exception of the last open-pit quarryed face, were fully protected by a Registration Order for Historic Monuments in August 2020.
The quarry is located at the so-called "At the Career", on a set of precise cadastral parcels, bounded by a plan annexed to the protection order. Owned by the municipality of Chassal-Molinges, this site illustrates the economic and social importance of quarries in the region, where the extraction of marbling stone could play a key role in local activities. The approximate location, noted as "passable" in the databases, places the site near the communal road from Chassal to Larivoire, offering a concrete overview of the Jurasian industrial heritage.
Although the practical information about opening up to the public or the services offered is not detailed, the protection of the site underscores its heritage value. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum database, confirm its status as a Historical Monument, while specifying its administrative address and Insee code. This classification helps to preserve a part of the industrial history of Franche-Comté, while offering a potential tourist or educational enhancement for future generations.
