Origin and history
La Croix de Cemetery de La Peyratte is a 12th-century cross in the cemetery of La Peyratte, in the Deux-Sèvres department. It has been classified as historical monuments since 16 March 1890. This cross, about 12 metres high, consists of a column consisting of four welded columns, resting on a circular base with four steps. An altar is arranged on one side of the barrel, allowing priests to celebrate blessings there.
Built probably by the monks of Talmont, the cross was moved to its current location in 1852. The current cross, embedded in a circle at the top, replaced the original cross at the beginning of the twentieth century. The latter was incorporated into the column in 1927. The structure, similar to that of the cross of Gourgé, illustrates the importance of religious monuments in funeral and community ceremonies in the Middle Ages.
The Cemetery Cross of La Peyratte is a remarkable example of medieval Christian architecture, reflecting both a religious function and a local historical heritage. Its classification as a historic monument highlights its heritage value and its role in the history of the Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine.
