Origin and history

Racanière Pigeon, located in Caylus in the Tarn-et-Garonne, is a historical monument dated around 1600. It perfectly illustrates the architecture of the tarnian type dovecotes, characterized by stone columns supporting a wooden box, surmounted by a pavilion roof and a lantern. This type of construction reflects local techniques and the economic importance of dovecotes in the agricultural fields of the period.

Ranked as a Historical Monument by order of 21 December 2009, this dovecote bears witness to the rural heritage of the Occitanie region. Pigeons, often associated with seigneuries or large farms, served as both a symbol of prestige and a food resource through pigeon breeding. Their presence in the rural landscape was a marker of the social and economic hierarchy.

The precise location of the pigeon tree, indicated as satisfactory (note 8/10), is referenced in the Merimée base under INSEE code 82038, confirming its anchoring in the commune of Caylus.
