Origin and history

The estate of La Brosse, located in Saint-Lactencin in the department of Indre (region Centre-Val de Loire), is an architectural complex composed of a body of central houses flanked by two wings in return, a staircase to the French, as well as a park decorated with driveways, pavilions and remains of fences. These elements, representative of a seigneurial or bourgeois property, were officially recognized by an inscription under the title of the Historical Monuments in 2023.

The inscription by decree of 23 May 2023 specifically covers the facades and roofs of the castle, the interior staircase, as well as the entire park with its built and landscaped components (arrival driveway, fence walls, jump-up, pavilions). This area illustrates the evolution of aristocratic or affluent residences in Berry, a region marked by a rural economy and land property networks. Such monuments often served as administrative, agricultural or social centres for their owners.

The approximate location of the site, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), and the lack of details of its exact construction period suggest a heritage whose detailed history remains partially documented. The available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its current status as a protected monument, without mentioning historical events or characters related to its past.

In the regional context of the Centre-Val de Loire, domains like La Brosse reflect an occupation of local elites, often involved in the management of land and agricultural resources. Their architecture, combining functionality and aesthetics, bears witness to the stylistic influences of the 18th and 19th centuries, periods of transformation of the French countryside as a result of the agricultural and industrial revolutions.

Today, the estate of La Brosse could, like other similar sites, be open to tourist uses (visits, rentals) or private (residences, events). However, current practical information does not specify its accessibility or contemporary functions, suggesting a mainly heritage and landscape vocation.

The recent inscription (2023) underlines the desire to preserve a heritage representative of the Berrichon territory, while integrating these units into the policies of valorisation of the Centre-Val de Loire, a region rich in castles and historical domains. The protection covers both architectural elements and the park, stressing the importance of gardens and green spaces in the composition of these properties.
