Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Lamonzie-Montastruc is a religious building built mainly in the 12th, 14th and 15th centuries. It is distinguished by a structure composed of a nave, a transept and a rectangular choir with a flat bedside. The square of the transept, vaulted with a cupola on pendants, rests on four batteries with inner corners cut into slices. This architectural detail suggests a Romanesque influence, while subsequent changes reflect defensive concerns.
The west facade is marked by a prominent portal, decorated with five descending archvolts. The first two are based on pilasters, the next three on turned columns, illustrating a careful sculptural work. A recent wall overlooks this gate, supporting a modern four-bay bell tower, a posterior addition not protected by the 1974 ranking. The dropural walls of the nave were raised in the 14th and 15th centuries, probably to strengthen the building during the Hundred Years' War, testifying to its strategic role.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 25 February 1974 (excluding the bell tower), the church now belongs to the municipality of Lamonzie-Montastruc. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque heritage, Gothic adaptations and traces of medieval conflicts, reflecting the turbulent history of the Dordogne. The accuracy of its location is estimated a priori satisfactory (level 6/10), according to available data.
