Stone Cross, in front of the church: inscription by decree of 19 November 1946
Origin and history
La Croix d'Archelange is a historical monument located in Archelange, in the Jura department (39), in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dating from the 1st quarter of the 17th century, this stone cross is in front of the village church. It was classified as a Historic Monument by decree of 19 November 1946, which is a testament to its heritage and cultural importance for the commune.
The stone crosses of this period were often erected for religious or commemorative reasons, serving as a spiritual landmark or a protective symbol for the inhabitants. In the rural context of the Jura in the seventeenth century, these monuments played a central role in community life, marking gathering places or prayer points. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the social and daily organization of villages.
The location of the Archelange Cross in front of the church suggests a close link with local religious practices. Its inscription as a Historical Monument in 1946 allowed its preservation, guaranteeing that it remains a tangible witness to the history and religious architecture of the region. Today, it belongs to the commune of Archelange, which manages and preserves it.
