Origin and history
The Church of the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix is an emblematic monument of Bailly-le-Franc, located in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 16th century, it is one of the many wood-paned churches characteristic of the Der Land. Its architecture reflects the local construction techniques of the time, mixing wood and stone in a style typical of the region.
The building was listed as historic monuments in 1926, recognizing its heritage value. This official protection underlines its importance in the architectural and religious heritage of Champagne-Ardenne. The church, owned by the commune, remains a testimony of local history and late medieval craftsmanship.
The country of the Der, where Bailly-le-Franc is located, was in modern times a rural region marked by agriculture and livestock. Churches, such as the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix, played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, assembly and identity marker for villages. Their construction in wooden panels often met local economic and material constraints.
