Origin and history
The Protestant temple of Lussan, built in the 19th century, is distinguished by its architectural simplicity. Rectangular in shape, it is built in coated rubble, without visible decoration, and covered with a roof with two tiles. A genoise and a small bell tower overlook the front door. Inside, a rostrum, commissioned by the Council of Civil Buildings in 1818, rests on two columns with doric capitals. The broken arched bays, added in 1844 by architect Begue, introduce a neo-Gothic touch into this clean set.
In 1818 the mayor of Lussan obtained permission to acquire a house to build a temple and a pastoral home. The following year, the project of architect Jacques Rouvière, a surveyor in Uzès, was approved by the Civil Buildings Council, subject to modifications. This temple, inscribed in the Historic Monuments in 2015, reflects the 19th century Protestant architectural adaptations, mixing functional sobriety and late stylistic influences.
The building, a communal property, illustrates the history of Protestant communities in the Gard after revolutionary upheavals. Its registration in 2015 covers the entire structure, located tower of the Remparts (cadastre K 233). The location, noted as "passable" (5/10) in the databases, corresponds to the approximate address of 5048 Rue de la Ritournelle, although its official address in the Merimée database remains generic (30580 Lussan).
