The water bridge, in its entirety (cf. A 193; B 17): registration by order of 6 November 2001

Origin and history

The bridge-aqueduct of Galas is a hydraulic structure located in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built during the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, it was designed to allow the Carpentras Canal to cross the Sorgue River. This type of structure illustrates the importance of hydraulics in this region, where water has always played a central role in agriculture and human activities.

The monument was recognized for its heritage value and entered in the inventory of historic monuments by an order dated November 6, 2001. This official protection underlines its architectural and technical interest, as well as its integration into the historical landscape of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Galas Water Bridge is part of a tradition of hydraulic engineering developed in Provence, where canals and aqueducts have been able to control water resources for centuries.

Today, Galas Water Bridge remains a testament to the region's industrial and agricultural history. Although the details of its construction or builders are not explicitly mentioned in the available sources, its existence reflects the growing need for irrigation and water flow management in the 19th century, a period marked by major changes in spatial planning techniques.
