Origin and history
The former Casino, located in La Ferté-Chevresis (Aisne, Hauts-de-France region), is an iconic 19th-century building. This monument, whose facades and roof were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 27 April 2016, bears witness to the importance of entertainment places in the small French communes at that time. Its architecture and location at 9 Rue du Château reflect the local cultural and social practices of the last century.
In the 19th century, theatres like the Casino played a central role in the community life of cities and villages. They served as a framework for theatre performances, concerts or dances, contributing to the social cohesion and cultural outreach of the territories. In Hauts-de-France, a region marked by an industrial and agricultural history, these spaces offered a loophole for local people, often under difficult living conditions.
Their preservation, like that of the Casino de La Ferté-Chevresis, makes it possible today to understand the evolution of leisure and urban planning in rural areas.
