Origin and history
The remains of the ancient church of St.Martin in Graçay, in the Cher, date from the twelfth century. This monument, now partially preserved, once belonged to the Benedictine priory of Massay. Of the original building, only the bedside remains, integrated into a subsequent building housing a hotel. This bedside is distinguished by a polygonal apse and columns forming foothills, adorned with spanned capitals, characteristic of the Romanesque architecture of the region.
The church of Saint Martin was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 22 March 1930, thus protecting the remains still visible. The property now belongs to the municipality of Graçay. Although its present state no longer makes it possible to grasp the entire medieval building, these remains offer an overview of the religious and architectural importance of the site, linked to the influence of Benedictines in the Centre-Val de Loire in the Middle Ages.
The location of the monument, indicated as approximate (accuracy level 5/10), places the remains on the Place du Marché in Graçay. This address, along with the associated GPS coordinates, suggests an integration of bedside into the contemporary urban fabric, highlighting the adaptive reuse of historical structures. No information is available on the current accessibility of the site or its tourist use.
