Origin and history
The former cemetery of the church of Avesnes-le-Comte is a historical monument located in the department of Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region. It is located around the church of Saint-Nicolas, in the heart of the commune, and was classified by ministerial decree on 2 September 1937. This classification specifically concerns the ancient funeral area, now owned by the municipality.
Cemeteries surrounding churches were, in medieval and modern times, central places in the life of rural communities. They served not only as burial places, but also as places of assembly and collective memory. In Avesnes-le-Comte, as in many municipalities in northern France, these spaces reflected the social and religious organization of the population, often marked by strong local identity and deep-rooted funeral traditions.
