Origin and history

The Menhir du Fuseau, also known as Le Contentoux, is an iconic megalithic vestige located in the commune of Plaine-Haute, in the department of Côtes-d-Armor, Brittany. Data from Neolithic, this porphyroid granite monument is 4.80 meters high for a width of 3 meters and a thickness of 1.40 meters. Its main sides are oriented north-east and south-east, and it is mentioned as early as 1883 in the Archaeological Directory of the North Coasts (now Côtes-d-Armor).

The Menhir has been officially recognized for its heritage value and has been listed as a historic monument since 8 February 1967. This protection underlines its archaeological and cultural importance in the Breton megalithic landscape. The site is referenced in specialized works such as Les megalithes de l'arrondissement de Saint-Brieuc (Loïc Langouët, 2005), which describes its geological and historical characteristics.

Located at approximate address 52 The White Noe, 22800 Plaine-Haute, the menhir is identified under cadastre B1 177. Although its geographical accuracy is assessed as poor (note 5/10 in the Merimée base), it remains a major point of interest for the study of the funeral and symbolic practices of Neolithic in Brittany. No information is available on its current accessibility or tourist use.
