Origin and history

The log house at the Jaudy wharf in Tréguier, classified as a Historical Monument in 1948, illustrates Breton civil architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries. Built in masonry of granite and shale, it is distinguished by its oak wood panels and slate cover. A square tower, covered in a pavilion, houses a wooden screw staircase serving the floors, as well as a high room originally equipped with a fireplace. The facades combine a ground floor in assembled granite, two floors in corbelling with wooden panels, and geminized windows. The wooden sculpted consoles and bands highlight the craftsmanship of the time.

On the ground floor, a fireplace with ground legs and a large wall-shaped arched panselier, equipped with a sink, testify to daily life. The floors house latrines and doors made of granite or wood, including a double door full hanger allowing independent access to the two houses (side of Jaudy quay and side of Renan street). The house, built to sympetize with its neighbour, saw its tower redesigned in the seventeenth century. Its ground floor, with its granite stalls, once served as a place of sale for fishermen landing their fish, reflecting the harbour activity of Tréguier.

The 17th century joinery and lockwork elements, as well as the corbelling supported by carved consoles, confirm the successive phases of construction and beautification. The gable façade, flanked by the square tower, and the wooden strips carved with allegations and lintels from the windows, make it an emblematic building of the Trigorian heritage. Its classification in 1948 underscores its historical and architectural value, preserving a rare testimony of the Breton urban habitat of the Modern Times.
