Origin and history
The Hostellerie de la Grappe is a building located in Auxerre, in the department of the Yonne, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. This monument is distinguished by its wooden panel facade, adorned with three carved windows and an equally designed post. These architectural elements, typical of medieval and renaissant buildings, bear witness to exceptional craftsmanship. The building was partially classified as Historic Monuments by a decree of February 12, 1924, thus highlighting its heritage value.
Auxerre, a historic town located on the banks of the Yonne, has long been a major commercial and religious crossroads in Burgundy. The hostelleries, like that of the Grappe, played a central role in welcoming travelers, merchants and pilgrims, reflecting the importance of exchanges and hospitality in the region. These establishments, often located near public squares or roads, were places of social and economic life, integrated into the medieval and reborn urban fabric.
The protection of the façade in 1924 is part of a broader approach to preserving the French architectural heritage at the beginning of the twentieth century. This period saw the official recognition of many buildings, in order to safeguard elements representative of local and national history. The Hostellerie de la Grappe, with its carved details, thus illustrates the artistic and cultural heritage of Burgundy, while recalling the importance of wood-paned constructions in traditional urban planning.
