Origin and history
The megalithic burial of the Pierre au Renard is a covered alley dated Neolithic, located in the wood of Crun, 3 km northwest of the village of Saint-Georges-sur-Erve (Mayenne). This funerary monument, typical of megalithic architecture, bears witness to the ritual practices and technical know-how of local prehistoric communities. Its placement on a height suggests a deliberate choice, perhaps linked to symbolic or practical considerations.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 31 May 1976, the Pierre au Renard illustrates the heritage importance of megalithic sites in Pays de la Loire. Its precise location, equidistant from Saint-Georges-sur-Erve and Sainte-Gemmes-le-Robert, makes it a territorial marker in the department of Mayenne. The monument is referenced in the Merimée base and documented by sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum.
The covered aisles, like that of the Pierre au Renard, generally served as collective burials in the Neolithic. Their construction reflects a complex social organization capable of mobilizing human and material resources to build sustainable structures. These monuments also played a role in the memory of the groups, marking the landscape in an enduring way.
Today, the site remains an object of study for archaeologists and a place of curiosity for megalithic heritage lovers.
