Cemetery Cross (Cd. AC 91): Order of 23 February 1912
Origin and history
The cross of the cemetery of Médréac is a monumental cross located in the cemetery of Médréac, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. Dating from the 16th century, it is representative of the Christian crosses of this period, often erected in cemeteries to mark a sacred place or commemorate a religious event. Its architecture and sculptures, although not detailed in the sources, reflect the local artistic traditions of the time.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 23 February 1912, this cross was moved from the old cemetery to the new one. It features sculpted characters on both sides, of similar size and invoice, suggesting a particular symbolic or religious importance. The cross is now owned by the commune of Médréac and remains a testimony of the Breton funerary heritage.
In the 16th century, Brittany was a region marked by a strong religious identity, where the cemetery crosses played a central role in community life. These monuments served not only as spiritual landmarks, but also as gathering places for ceremonies and prayers. Their presence in cemeteries underlined the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life and collective memory of the villages.
