Tumulus elliptical (cad. A 969): classification by decree of 25 June 1927
Origin and history
The elliptical tumulus of Liniez is a listed historical monument located in the municipality of Liniez, in the department of Indre (36), in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This funeral site dates back to the Iron Age, a period marked by burial practices under artificial terres, often associated with elites or collective rites. Its classification by decree on 25 June 1927 underlines its heritage and archaeological importance.
The tumulus of that period generally served as burials, sometimes for local personalities or specific social groups. Their elliptical form, less common than circular tumulus, may indicate changes in construction techniques or in particular cultural influences. At the Iron Age, the Centre-Val de Loire region was occupied by Gaulish peoples whose agricultural, craft and commercial activities structured society.
The location of the tumulus, near Les Michauds, is documented with an accuracy deemed "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), thanks to GPS coordinates and cadastral references (parcel A 969). Although practical information on visits is not detailed in available sources, its status as a Historic Monument guarantees legal protection and continued scientific interest.
The data are mainly from the Monumentum database and the internal archives linked to the Merimée database. The associated administrative address (5160 Les Michauds, 36150 Liniez) confirms its territorial anchor in the country of Châteauroux, an area rich in protohistoric remains.
