Origin and history
The Coutances stair turret is a historic monument located in the city of the same name, Normandy. Built in the 15th century, it represents an example of late medieval civil architecture, typical of the urban developments of this period. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by order of 2 April 1946 bears witness to its heritage value, despite the damage suffered over the centuries.
This monument was partially destroyed by war, a fate shared by many Norman buildings during the conflicts that crossed the region. The archives mention its precise address at the rue du Pertuis-Trouard (today 2 Rue Perthuis Trouard), in an urban area whose exact location remains approximate according to the current databases (accuracy level: 5/10).
Ancient photographs, such as those of Léon and Lévy under Creative Commons license, document his condition before destruction. Today, its legal status (registration) protects what remains of the structure, although information on its accessibility to the public (visits, services) is missing from available sources. La Manche, the department where Coutances is located, thus retains a fragile heritage, witness to the historical upheavals of Lower Normandy.
