Origin and history
The monument to the dead of Champvans is a memorial building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Jura (39), in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is located precisely at 2 avenue de la Gare, on a plot adjacent to the AB section of the cadastre. This monument, owned by the commune, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 11 January 2024, making it a fully protected heritage.
Monuments to the dead, like that of Champvans, play a central role in the collective memory of the French communes. They pay tribute to the soldiers and victims of conflicts, including the two world wars, and serve as a place of recollection for the inhabitants. In the Jura, as in other rural areas, these monuments are often located in public spaces, such as squares or the surroundings of stations, to mark their symbolic importance in local life.
Their preservation reflects communities' commitment to their history and the transmission of the memory of past sacrifices.
