Cardinal de Richelieu - Founder of the stronghold
Created Brouage in the 17th century.
Origin and history
The Brouage department and barracks, located in Hiers-Brouage in Charente-Maritime, date from the 17th century. They are an integral part of the former stronghold of Brouage, created ex nihilo by Richelieu at the beginning of this century. This military site, designed according to a checkered plan, is one of the few complete examples of a strong plain town prior to Vauban's work. The fortifications, low houses of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the two pedriers (Saint-Luc and La Brèche) and the barracks, testify to its strategic defensive role.
The primary purpose of these buildings was to protect the nearby Rochefort arsenal. Their historical importance was recognized by an inscription in the title of historical monuments on 9 August 1949, specifically covering facades and roofs. Today, these remains offer a unique overview of pre-vaubian military architecture and planned urban planning under the Richelieu leadership.
Brouage also illustrates the adaptation of strong positions to the geopolitical challenges of the seventeenth century, a period marked by religious conflicts and European rivalries. The preservation of its urban route and military buildings makes it a major heritage site, managed by the municipality. Although the sources mention an approximate location (24 Rue de l'Hospital), their accuracy remains limited, with a cartographic assessment considered a priori satisfactory (level 6/10).
