Chapelle Saint-Pierre (old) (cad. C 620): Order of 19 March 1992
Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Pierre de Vers-Pont-du-Gard, also called priory Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, dates from the 12th century. It was initially attached to the collegial chapter of Notre-Dame de Beaucaire. Its Romanesque architecture, marked by a cradle vaulted nave and a cul-de-four apse, made it a regional model. The decoration was limited to denticles and saw teeth under the uppers of the apse, while the nave was covered with lauzes and the apse retained its original roof.
The building suffered the collapse of its vault, altering its primitive structure. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 19 March 1992 under the name Chapelle Saint-Pierre (ancient), it now belongs to the commune of Vers-Pont-du-Gard. Its location, noted as fair (5/10) in the Merimée base, corresponds to the INSEE 30346 code in the Gard department in the Occitanie region.
No information is available on its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation). The sources mention only its status as communal property and its heritage classification. The chapel illustrates Provencal Romanesque religious architecture, sober and functional, typical of the small medieval rural priories.
