Origin and history
The Saint Mary of Guerno Fountain is a religious edicle built in 1787, in the commune of Guerno, Morbihan department, England. It is distinguished by its stone architecture, open on three sides, with a dome surmounted by a cross and a niche closed by a wrought iron gate. This type of fountain, often associated with local devotional practices, reflects the importance of sacred sources in the Breton culture of the time.
The fountain is located precisely on Rue du Pont-Vivier, in the hamlet of Branféré. It was listed as historic monuments on 25 September 1928, recognizing its heritage value. Fountains of this type generally served as places of pilgrimage or worship, sometimes sheltering statues of saints, as evidenced by the niche in the bottom wall.
The building illustrates the sober and functional style of 18th century rural religious constructions in Brittany. Its inscription among the historical monuments of Morbihan highlights its role in the local heritage, alongside other protected fountains in the region. The fine columns and slender dome make it a characteristic example of Breton devotee architecture, mixing practical utility and religious symbolism.
