Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste des Fargutes is a Catholic religious building located in the hamlet of the Fargutes, in the commune of Crespinet, in the department of Tarn (Occitanie region). Although the sources mention construction in the 15th century for its current use, the initial construction periods date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. This shift suggests further partial transformations or reconstructions. The building consists of two distinct parts: a flat-bed nave of about ten metres, pierced by Gothic bays, and a much larger hemicycle chapel, probably reserved for local lords. These two spaces, despite their contrasting dimensions, date back to the same period.

The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and today serves as a chapel of devotion. It was listed as historical monuments by order of 29 December 1978, a protection that also includes a stone cross carved on its two sides, integrated into the wall of the adjacent cemetery. This cross, although less documented, bears witness to the symbolic importance of the site. The property of the building belongs to the municipality of Crespinet, and its present state reflects both its past religious use and its contemporary heritage role.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its hybrid architecture, combining simplicity and seigneurial elements. The exact location of the monument, at Les Farguettes, is specified by approximate GPS coordinates (estimated at 5/10), as well as by its postal address: 5063 Les Farguettes, 81350 Crespinet. The building is associated with a nearby fort house, suggesting a broader seigneurial complex, now partially disappeared or transformed.

The regional historical context places this church in a period marked by the affirmation of seigneurial power and the rise of Gothic architecture in Occitanie. Private chapels, such as the Fargutes, often illustrated aristocratic piety while serving as a place of worship for local communities. The inscription in the title of historical monuments in 1978 preserved this testimony of the 13th-XIVth centuries, despite subsequent modifications.

No information is available on opening up to the public, the possibility of guided tours or current cultural events. The sources focus on its architectural description and legal status, without evoking its contemporary use beyond its role as a chapel of devotion. The carved cross, an annex but protected element, recalls medieval funeral practices and lapidary art of the time.
